Foster And Adoptive Parent Advanced Training In Arizona Class Outline

Below you will find a detailed outline of what will be covered in the Parenting Foster and Adopted Kids Advanced Training.  As a participant of the class, you will receive two books (The Great Behavior Breakdown and Beyond Consequences, Logic, and Control).  These books will correspond to the topics presented in the training.  If you have any questions about this training, feel free to contact us.

Beyond Consequences BookSession 1: Understanding and Healing Trauma in Children:

  • Parents will watch and process the DVD Helping Children Heal
  • Parents will learn from Experts in the field of Attachment to understand:
    • How stress affects development
    • How parents help children emotionally regulate
    • The effects of a parent’s emotional unavailability on their children
  • Parents will learn how children develop trust
  • Parents will learn how anger in children stems from underlying fear
  • Parents will learn the difference between dysregulation and disobedience
  • Parents will gain a basic understanding of brain functioning as it relates to trauma in children
  • Parents will learn how to be Bigger, Stronger, Wiser, and Kind in parenting their children

Session 2: Understanding How Children Develop Security in Attachment:

  • Parents will see how children develop security
  • Parents will become familiar with their children’s needs on the Circle of Security®
  • Parents will learn about how to support their children’s exploration
  • Parents will learn how to be available for their children to return to them
  • Parents will learn about the importance of “being with” children in their emotion
  • Parents will see how important their presence is for their children

Session 3: Understanding and Working Through Our own Fears:

  • Parents will learn how their own emotions can affect their ability to “be with” their children’s emotions
  • Parents will learn about children’s cues and miscues
  • Parents will see how a parent’s shift in her understanding of misbehavior improves her relationship with her son
  • Parents will learn about what secure attachment looks like
  • Parents will learn how to meet the needs of kids with insecure attachment
  • parents will learn how to become a safe base for their children

Session 4: Understanding and Handling Specific Behaviors:

  • Parents will learn how to regulate themselves to regulate their kids
  • Parents will learn how to handle lying and stealing
  • Parents will learn how to handle sexual acting out behaviors
  • Parents will learn how to help their children decrease their stress
  • Parents will learn how to handle behaviors at school
  • Parents will learn how to handle violence and other acting out behaviors

Using video’s from The Institute of Child Development at Texas Christian University, Parents will watch experts work with children who have severe acting out behaviors.

Session 5: Understanding and Handling Specific Behaviors:

Using video’s from The Institute of Child Development at Texas Christian University, Parents will learn step-by-step methods to help children heal from past trauma and create new ways of interacting with others.
